Overview

BIODRONES is a research project focused on biomimetic and innovative hydrodynamic concepts for high-efficiency underwater gliding drones for ocean research.

Within the MAO Research Group activities, the project provides an application context for research on:

  • simulation-based design optimization
  • dimensionality reduction
  • surrogate-based modeling
  • machine learning for engineering design

This page provides a concise overview within the MAO Research Group website.

Scientific Scope

The objective of BIODRONES is to provide the scientific and industrial communities with a systematic hydrodynamic optimization study on biomimetic and innovative hydrodynamic configurations for autonomous underwater gliders intended for ocean surveying.

The project targets compact configurations, conceived to fit in a station-wagon trunk or van, while aiming at high hydrodynamic efficiency, range, and endurance under given design specifications and constraints.

The initiative is also intended to support affordable ocean data collection, ocean digitalization, and possible technology transfer toward SMEs and industries active in underwater robotics.
